Hesperia is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located east of Sacramento and west of Fresno. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. The name Hesperia is derived from Spanish settlers' pronunciation of "huevara" or "oak tree", which they thought resembled the sound of a gunpowder charge. The first European to visit Hesperia was Francisco Vaca de la Vega on July 5, 1776. A year later, Antonio Menéndez de Avila sent a letter from New Spain to his friend and mentor Father Gabriel García Márquez y Torres reporting he had seen an oak tree with fresh leaves at an elevation of 10,000 feet (3100 m). This inspired Father García Márquez to name the new settlement after him—Hesperia (New Spain) meaning 'the place where Oaks grow'. In 1814, José Joaquín Cisneros granted Rancho Nuevo al Hueso to Juan Bautista Alvarado for 999 years as part of hisLos Californios land grant. In 1835–36, during Mexican rule over California, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Anglo-Americans residing in what is now Fresno County be deported and their property seized. Most people left behind were those who lived near Big Water Creek on El Dorado Hills Boulevard; these people formed what became known as the Horsemen group. They camped out for eight weeks until Mexican troops arrived and drove them away with artillery fire. Between 1850 and 1860 many families moved into Hesperia from Stockton due to bad soil quality in that portion of California; however this area became majority Hispanic by 1870 when most residents came from central Mexico City areas such as Aguascalientes and Veracruz states seeking better opportunities than in eastern California towns like Hesperia where dirt cheap land was available only if one could get government favoritism through political connections or bribery techniques called “carpetbagging” In 1875 John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill hereabouts with twenty acres (10 ha) he acquired along Big Water Creek below Ranchero Road north of present day Hesperia Village limits The post office opened at 8am on November 3rd 1850 under jurisdiction of Yuba City; it closed July 15th 1861 due to seat limit set by Congress following Oregon Treaty boundary changes brought about by James Kansan's purchase from Russia Postmaster: Pedro Sanchez It reopened on September 21st 1865 with Frank Wetherill as mail clerk.. It remained open until 1975 when it went out OFFSITE due to fire damage caused by lightning strike
