Hesperia is a small town in California, located about 20 miles southeast of downtownLos Angeles. The population was 9,687 at the 2010 census. Hesperia is home to the University of California, Hesperia and is one of the most racially diverse communities in Southern California. The first people to settle in Hesperia were Native Americans who arrived from central Mexico around 1821. They built teepees and hunted game near what is now Downtown Los Angeles. In 1848, American soldiers burned down part of the old Mission San Gabriel Arcangeles due to an overzealous search for gold by miners. This event left a deep impression on many early settlers, who dubbed their new community "Hesperia" after the destroyed mission. Many local businesses continue to thrive today thanks to strong customer relationships and a focus on innovation and service excellence. Residents are proud of their community's diverse history which includes contributions from firefighters, police officers, doctors, farmers, developers and more. Hesperia, California is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847. The area now known as Hesperia was part of Rancho Rinconada, a Mexican land grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado and Valeriano Gomez in 1836. In 1846, the US government acquired Rancho Rinconada from Alvarado and granted it to George Hearst. He named the ranch Hesperia after his home town of Hermosillo, Mexico. In 1867, during the American Civil War, General John Custer attacked and destroyed a Confederate cavalry patrol near Hesperia while on his way to reinforce General Grant's army at Fredericksburg. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. In 1861, following its incorporation as an incorporated city in 1928, Hesperia joined with nearby Rocklin to form one municipality which remained until 1959 when it split again into two municipalities with Hesperia becoming its own separate city once again. The population of Hesperia reached 100,000 by 1950; however this number has since decreased due to various factors including missions being closed and new housing developments being built closer to downtown instead of within walking or driving distance of historic properties such as Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and Monterey Jack Canyon Preserve). The first Europeans arrived in what is now Hesperia around 1680 AD when Spanish missionaries went looking for a site for their mission colony at Monterey Bay. After finding no suitable locations they abandoned their search in 1769 and returned home because there were too many trees on El Camino Real (the road that ran through present-day Angeles National Forest) for them to build a mission here. A few years later additional Spanish missionaries came looking for new land grants but found no takers so they continued farming until 1786 when they finally abandoned all attempts at colonization because of Native American incursions into their territory. On July 10th 1817 Joseph Smith published Latter Day Saints' Journal: "I saw an angel stand upon Mount Carmel attractiveness me." This event marks LDS scripture's first publication outside Nauvoo, Illinois where it had been published weekly since February 1st 1800 under previous leader Brigham Young Jr.'s directorship (See also D&C 124:4-5). At about this time President James Kirtland wrote:"After I have finished my missionary labors . . . I will go upcountry" (Journal Mar 3 1830 p3), indicating he would soon leave Nauvoo behind him and establish another church headquarters elsewhere in what is now California if he could find adequate land elsewhere.(see map below) Although Kirtland never crossed over into Oregon or Nevada he may have sensed early potential gold deposits near present-day Hesperia(see map below) which eventually led him to designate this area as part of his golden states property westward Expansion Plan announced March 14th 1830 while still residing in Nauvoo.(see also entry on James Kirtland#Oregon) A short time later Mormon prophet Orson Pratt assigned Masonic member Ezra Taft Benson Philanthropist pioneer Levi Huntington Miner & Minerals Co., Lumberjacks & Masons #1 partners Jesse Waddell etc..to explore theseunnamedgoldenstate prospectsthroughoutwestfor minerals( see extract from History Magazine Vol XXVII No6 p8 November 1923) although no exploration took place until September 26th 1830 when convict labor company discovered rich silver mines called Sutter's Gold Field south east corner original placer claim reported by Jedediah Humboldt on August 7th 1800.(see map below) On April 12th1830 Mexican banderos force open Stockton gate leading northward across today's Umpqua River Bridge playing havoc with goods moving back & forth between Sacramento County & Oregon townships; resultinginextensivelossoflifeandproperty( see narrative accompanying photo p2 bottom right side bottom left side)).
