Hesperia is a small city in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1877 by George R. Hesperia and his wife, Mary Blythe. The city has a population of about 54,000 people as of the 2010 census. The City of Hesperia was named after George R. Hesperia, who organized the town site in 1877 from land donated by James Wolk and others. The first post office was established at the corner of Spring Street and Brown Avenue on December 12, 1877. In 1886, the Pacific Railroad brought water to Hesperia from Yucaipa River via pipeline. In 1915, when the Stanislaus Valley Flood destroyed most of downtown Fresno, local farmers banded together to purchase a block of land at High Street and Eureka Boulevard near present-day Hesperia's east side for development into what would become Hesperia Township (later Genoa Township). The board plat for Hesperia Township was filed on November 17th 1915 with Humble Oil & Gas Company as title holder; it bore date November 25th 1916 and listed: "Hesperia Township". On January 1st 1922, following passage of Proposition 8 which banned same-sex marriage in California, many residents chose to leave their homes and flee to neighboring communities such as Monterey Peninsula or Orange County because they fears that their taxes would be raised if they stayed within California's legal marriage laws. On January 3rd 1922, Mayor Hodge sent out a letter urging all citizens not to stay within boundaries set by Proposition 8; this resulted in an increase in business tax rates for businesses located within city limits as well as an exodus from town center towards rural areas outside of town limits which had been untouched by Prop 8 . As recently as 2000 there were still active gay pride marches scheduled throughout the month long celebration known locally as "Weekend at Town Hall." Many members who lived within city limits duringProposition8 now regret leaving behind friends and family back home while living openly(or secretly) Same-sex marriages were still legal then

The area became part of Mexican California in 1848, and was later admitted to the United States as part of the 19th century.
