The town began as a small fishing village on the edge of Point Conception Bay. As sand started washing up onshore, fishermen built their first homes around 1840-1850. By 1860, there were more than 20 houses in Hermosa Beach proper! By 1870, some local merchants had formed a board of directors to manage the new town's affairs. In 1887, George P. Hermosa purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land at La Jolla Headlands for $5 per acre ($34 per km2). He erected a two-story wooden cottage called "Hermoso" which he naming after his home country Spain where he had spent several months visiting prior to purchasing the property. He also planted grapes and figs on his estate which yielded crops that were sold locally until 1915 when Prohibition made wine un saleable across America without special license or fermentation process provided by French Huguenots who had settled in California during Durango Gold Rush era (1848-1857). In 1915George P. Hermosa married Helen Keller who was then living with her family in Bostonport Massachusetts USA; they divorced later that year reportedly due to differences over marital custody rights for their children Keller now lives with her sister Paulette outside Paris while George P., now an octogenarian at 95 years old resides alone at Hermoso beach house near Santa Monica Pier overlooking Poseidon Lagoon
