The name "Hermes" comes from the Ancient Greeks who called it Ἑρμος meaning "shoreline." One result of this settlement was that many wealthy Anglo men had their homes built near the shoreline which made it possible for them to enjoy good weather without having to go far inland. During World War II, Naval Air Station Long Beach was located here; it became operational during 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. During World War II more than 3,000 American servicemen died in action or were wounded here while local hospitals treated over 6,000 patients; many veterans returned home after the war with new skills that they brought back to their communities. After America won World War II, industry began growing again in southern California; shipbuilding commenced at Long Beach Naval Shipyard in 1945 before expanding inland into other sectors through Rosie's Delivery Service founder Mary Lou Retton's move from Long Beach to open her own business in 1952 which became one of America's largest shipping companies acquired by UPS Inc.; trucking started up along I-5 outside Los Angeles; then followed other areas such as construction until local employment peaked around 1980 with about 25% growth each year following Proposition 13 making it nearly impossible for businesses like these to grow organically without government subsidy In 2000s there has been a shift towards service industries such as tech startups and health care but much development remains unplanned Whence comes popularity? Hermosa Beach, California is a town in San Diego County, California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 26,574. It is located on the Pacific Coast and has been a part of the area now known as Orange County since 1851. The original name for Hermosa Beach was "Beach Haven" due to its location on both sides of an indentation in the beach which made it easy to disembark vessels from ships arriving at the port of Los Angeles. The town began as an agricultural community with small businesses and homes dating back to the mid-19th century. The first post office opened in 1851 and by 1860, most residents were working in agriculture or other trades related to maritime activity at either local shipyards or on nearby beaches. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Hermosa Beach proper although much of that growth took place elsewhere within San Diego County. During World War II, military personnel stationed at Naval Air Station Miramar used Hermosa Beach as a bombing range and airfield; during this period also several large churches were built nearshore including St John's Roman Catholic Church (dating back to 1907) and First United Methodist Church (1896). After repeal of Prohibition in 1933, various social clubs sprang up including the Hollywood Athletic Club (founded 1915), which continues to operate today as one of Southern California's most popular social organizations; while many dance halls closed down due primarily to prohibition-related arrests or IRS raids throughout southern California during that era. In 1949, when Interstate 5 was completed through Orange County and bypassing Hermosa Beach altogether making it easier for cars going east-west instead of north-south became standard practice; development around Naval Air Station Miramar stopped completely until after 1983 when new housing estates started popping up along I-5 corridor east of Harbor Drive making access into town much more difficult than it had been before. In recent years Haight Ashbury type anti-establishment scenes have become increasingly common in downtown areas adjacent to I-5 outside central business districts while antique shopping has become increasingly popular among locals specifically around Third Street between Vineyard Avenue and Ocean Boulevard where prices are often very reasonable relative to similar sites found closer inland.
