Hermosillo, or Hermosa Beach as it was known until the turn of the century, is a town located on the shore of Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles County, California. The name "Hermosa" comes from two Spanish words meaning "beautiful" and "shore." The first place to see the ocean from inside Hermosillo was in 1795 when Mission San Fernando Rey de las Americas was built on what is now Roosevelt Way. In 1821, after Mexico won its independence from Spain, Mexican soldiers burned down part of the mission and replaced it with a Buddhist monastery called Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The town's first post office was established in 1827. By 1840, there were over 1,500 residents living in Hermosa Beach. During the years following World War II (1939-1945), Hermosa Beach saw an influx of Japanese Americans who had been forced into concentration camps during the war. The beach community experienced rapid growth during World War II because of its proximity to naval yards and shipyards where military aircraft were built and repaired. As a result of this activity, many businesses sprang up along Roosevelt Way including combat stores that sold everything from food to ammunition to tools used by Navy seamen. Many people who lived near Naval Air Station Miramar also came to Hermosa for shopping at local boutiques and department stores patronized by servicemen and their families before returning home each night aboard USS Hornet airfields nearby. In 1951, construction began on Interstate 5 which would connect Los Angeles with points north and east via I-5H through Orange County. For many people in Hermosa Beach Jefferson Boulevard became Hollywood Boulevard while Roosevelt Way became North Central Avenue; but most people continued to call their street by its original name even though they no longer lived near any naval yards or shipyards. After several decades of steady growth characterizing both male-dominated leisure activities such as swimming (the men took advantage of heated pools inside navy ships) as well as women’s participation in more active pursuits such as yachting (the women frequently went boating or sailing) due primarily to increased access to transportation facilities along North Central Avenue corridor – including beaches – culminating with developments such as Seaside Heights Village subdivision becoming accessible only after driving south for miles on freeway exits serving Long Beach; Highway 1 thenongely ran parallel running perpendicular between downtown LA & Providencia Driveaway
Hermosa Beach is a town in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 14,355 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Hermosa Beach were Spanish missionaries in 1769–70. Jesuit Father José Montoya Bejarano and his companions landed on shore on November 21, 1769, exploring what is now Pacific Beach and naming it Isla de la Cruz for Saint Christopher. A few days later they named the beach Lighthouse Point after their first sighting of it from the ship "Almirante Gomez" on December 2nd. The first post office was established in 1872 at Point Loma (now Old Town). In 1876Pacific Electric Railway locomotive #7017 pulled a freight train through Hermosa Canyon between Isla de la Cruz and La Jolla before continuing east to Petco Park in downtown San Diego via Wells Street. In 1886 Pacific Electric began passenger service along Welles Street with two coaches carrying 30 passengers each way between La Jolla and Hermosa Beach; service ended in 1945 when high water cut off the tracks near Lewistown Avenue near Our Lady of the Rosary Church. In 1951 local resident Don Freeman built an airtight stationary tank farm which remains one of Southern California's largest underground tanks today! Plymouth Meeting Company opened its new headquarters – adjacent to American Airlines Flight 511 over LAX – just north of Hermosa Boulevard on October 24th, 1969 as part of their expansion into Southern California.. The Headquarters Building still stands today and can be seen from Interstate 15 southbound near milepost 215 about 8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles! On October 1st 1971 American Airlines moved out from their original Terminal 3 building next door to US Airways Center after 36 years serving as both terminals for Southern California flights! From 1970 until 1978 American also had an annex - currently known as “the old hangar” - located across Figueroa St., NW from Terminals 3 & 4! Today you can still see remnants of this annex including a large metal plate that once served as an airline gate/terminal sign!American Airlines Terminal 3 reopened on January 15th, 2009 following 35 years without interruption!! After 35 years without interruption American Airlines officials announced that all mainline carrier plans have been cancelled effective March 16th 2009!!! This created some much needed excitement andmemorialization around Terminal 3 which continues to serve ASLA customers well today despite the closure !! An interesting footnote about Terminal3: Prior to its closure many employees who worked inside were able to take advantage of Wingstop Coffee shops located nearby (inside Terminals 3 & 4) during these interim months whileTerminal3 remained closed due to reconstruction efforts
