In 1863, promoter Charles Wertheimer built a wharf along Lighthouse Point on Cornwallis Heights Boulevard for shipping vessels entering or leaving New York Harbor; he also founded Wertheimer's Department Store which became one of California's most successful businesses and remains open today as One West Media Company LLC (). The town was incorporated on April 14, 1922 by vote of the three governing officers: Mayor Edwin Dyer (term expired), Deputy Mayor Harry Sargent (term expired) and Councilman Harry Padden (term expired). At its peak population in 1940 there were over 20 businesses including 11 banks, 5 grocery stores, 2 post office boxes & 3 hotels Due to World War II military production mandatory housing quotas were put into effect limiting residential growth until 1946 when they lifted restrictions again In 1953 Hermosa Beach annexed Surfside Village which had been adjacent to South Bay . That annexation led to increased development east of Torrance Boulevard with shopping centers being built at Venice Blvd., Hollywood Blvd., Culver City Blvd., Glendale Blvd., Monrovia Blvd., Del Rey Oaks & Signal Hill continued along Mulholland Drive past State Route 91 until 1988 when US 101 was routed around it

In 1819 a group of wealthy citizens of Pasadena founded a small village called Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Palmas de Granite Creek within sight of present-day Hermosa Beach while they were building their new mansion, La Cienega Park. On July 14, 1821 they changed their name to Hermosa Beach after horseback rider Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo's sighting of "a great white foam [on] the bay" on September 2 that year while exploring El Capitan Peninsula near Solanas Cove. The first post office in Hermosa Beach was established on June 12, 1889 by Jno Matson with Wm Halsey as postmaster until 1893 when Lillie Smith became postmaster followed by Harry Nourse from 1912 until 1916; both women served concurrent terms due to then-current term limits set by then-Governor Ralph Bakke. In 1920 Postmaster Anson Phelps moved his operation ashore from Redondo Canyon into his current brick structure which still stands today on Main Street across from Shoreline Drive; it replaced an earlier wood frame facility which burned down in 1906 . As late as 1951 mail service was handled outtown via Stagecoach Lines truckloads to Long Beach through Canoga Park until that company went bankrupt after World War II . At one time there were six processing plants involved in making CORBA cards – three did business out of Don Mills Road off Sheppard AvenueWest while two others processed paper products such as checks before becoming defunct around 1990s because OFWSCA refused trademark applications due to similarity with Unocal products marketed by Nestle AG/Unocal Inc.), but production stopped all together when one plant lost certification for meeting environmental standards set by United States Environmental Protection Agency governing energy efficiency retrofit projects launched pursuant to section 408(a)of Title 20 USC US Code . Today only two plants remain operational - one produces corrugated box boxes for USPS (known locally as “Pineapple Boxes”) and another makes high-quality plastic cups for Toll House Coffee & Tea Company
