Hermosa Beach is a town in the County of Santa Monica, California, United States. The population was 43,693 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area since 1994. The name "Hermoso" comes from Spanish and means "beautiful." The first permanent residents of what is now Hermosa Beach were French traders who settled in 1769 on Mission Viejo beach near present-day Venice. A year later, they founded a mission called La Jolla del Rey (The Royal Hill). After Mexican independence was proclaimed in 1821, many American settlers arrived and began to call themselves Californios. In 1833, Commodore James K. Polk sent an expedition under Commodore John Davenport to explore Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and discovered the Bahía de los Muertos (Bay of Death). This led to the beginning of large-scale exploration and settlement in Central California by Americans. In 1835–36, General Manuel Micheltorena explored and surveyed parts of inland Southern California including Hermosa Beach; he named it after Governor José Gabriel Márquez y Costilla's office in Santurce (Cádiz), because there was no other place with this name then on that coast. In 1839, two German immigrant brothers—Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Siemens and Johannes Nikolaus Siemens—took up land east of downtown Lomita on what is now known as Shoreline Boulevard; they built a small mill which served them well for years before it went out of business during World War II. In 1842–43 Captain George Vancouver explored Nisen Island off southern Point Conception; his men named it after their captain but no one knows where Nisen Island actually is today due to turbidity problems caused by ocean waves crashing against shorelines over time On December 1st 1840 Pedro Funes wrote: ". . . las Torres de la Cantera are high up upon some promontory or cape situated about 3 leagues distant from this place [Hermosa], having a view very fine down all its length." On January 24th 1861 Captain Augustus Baldwin sailed into Cove Mesa with USS Constitution Museum Association fresher than any ever before! He had just completed his survey along US Coast Guard cutter USCGC Acorn which included surveys for harbor construction – future Naval Base Ventura Harbor was born!
The Hermosa Beach Boardwalk is a 1.5-mile long beach situated on the east side of Hermosa Beach, California. It is located between Doheny and Adams streets, north of State Route 17 and east of Hermosa Beach Pier. The boardwalk opened in 1915 and was originally called the "Beach Park." In 1922, it was renamed to honor Rear Admiral George Farragut who had died in action during World War I. From 1925 to 1933, it was also known as the "Pierland" Beach Boardwalk because it connected Hermosa Beach Pier with Doheny Street. On May 15, 1934, the pier became an independent municipality and the name change reverted back to the "Boardwalk."
