After his victory over McKinley in November 1896, he returned through this community during a period when he was criticized for not visiting more southern California towns like Los Angeles or San Francisco due to concerns about white flight after his election winnings were revealed publically . A lighthouse was built here in 1827 by Captain Augustus Wickersham based on his sighting of a large ship off the coast of Santa Barbara County two years earlier. A hotel called The Queen's was built in 1886 by businessman Fenton Crosby as a luxury steamship terminal for passengers coming from San Francisco Bay Area via Ventura County and Los Angeles County. In 1893, Mayor Will Rogers donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of land to the City of Hermosa Beach for use as an open space area which became known as "The Park". In 1911–12, millionaire John Drexel donated $5 million towards construction of what is now known as La Jolla Cove beachfront park which would become one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations during World War II because it offered easy access to naval ships docked at Pier 39 adjacent to the local navy base
