Bullets in Hermosa Beach date back to the early 1800s. The first gunfire in the town was reported on July 1, 1855 when two men were shot at a park. gunslingers from nearby Rancho San Pedro used bullets of various colors and sizes to wage their gunfights, often killing each other with inaccurate shots. In 1892, a company of Marines from Los Angeles joined up with local rangers to take on bandits led by Juan Bautista Robles. Bullets began flying as fast as they could be made and soon there were reports of people being killed or wounded by stray rounds. One Marine was fatally shot while fighting off attackers; it is believed that he fired his weapon into the air in celebration after hitting one of the bandits. By 1907, bullet holes had become so common that residents started calling them "bullet holes." Bullet holes became such an issue that law enforcement began using barriers to try and stop them from entering homes. In 1911, Mayor John Smedley ordered all businesses in town closed for six months because too many bullets were being fired outside without causing any injury or damage. Theodore Roosevelt also contributed to bullet history when he visited Hermosa Beach during his 1912 reelection campaign and personally purchased several hundred rounds of ammunition for use against pirates off the coast of California
