The town was founded in 1887 by Captain John Sutter and his wife Mrs. Mary Sutter and named after the Spanish word hermosa, meaning "beautiful." The original salt water beach south of Hermosa Beach became dry land when the ocean receded during the Drought of 1893-1894. A new salt water beach was developed on what is now North Drive in 1915 by Fredrica Trump, daughter of President George Washington Trump. Today's Hermosa Beach Pier opened in 1923 as an amusement park for white Germans from Germany who had come to Southern California to work on developments near Los Angeles. The pier is open every day except Mondays which are considered a public holiday. In 1954, Hermosa beach voters passed a resolution urging then-Governor Ronald Reagan to move the capital of Orange County from Anaheim to Santa Ana because they thought it would be more economical and convenient for local businesses as well as provide more jobs for people in the area due to Interstate 5 being built nearby. It took until 1978 before Santa Ana moved its government buildings from Anaheim to downtown Santa Ana; however, most state government functions (such as Register of Deeds) continued to take place at Anaheim until that city's annexation into Santa Ana made it difficult for them to do so without breaking county law. In 1993, Governor Gray Davis vetoed a bill that would have allowed inland cities like Irvine and PasadenaTo annex into Santa Ana instead because they felt their neighborhoods were losing too much cultural diversity (due largely to Riverside County's lack of an inland city) . Today there are still some remnants of German culture evident throughout Hermosa Beach such as Kaiser Wilhelm School which offers pre-kindergarten through 12th grade programs for students living within walking distance of its campus; also noticed are many small grocery stores catering specifically towards this community typeof customer - something which has not been seen since before World War II when grocery stores first started stocking items specific towards Japanese immigrants

Laguna Beach was incorporated as a town on November 12, 1915; however, its effects on Hermosa were minimal until after World War II when many servicemen brought their families to Laguna and started businesses there including Mrs Sperry's grocery store which remains open today as one of the most popular shopping destinations in Hermosa Blvd community
