As America's first astronomy factory, the San Francisco Observatory (later the California Institute of Technology) was responsible for making scopes available to all. The name of the town derived from the Latin word hydra, meaning "to coil" or "to spangle." Captain Hill's ranch located near present-day Hercules had been successful for many years and he decided to move his operations there in 1853. In addition to Rancho Hercules, Captain Hill also founded a town called Doniphan which later became part of Hercules. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Doniphan and some businessmen had built a sawmill and grist mill on creek known as Big Creek because they could produce goods enough to cover their costs while still being profitable. However, within ten years all of this activity had come to an end when gold discoveries began flowing into California from southward at San Francisco Bay. The influx of new miners sent prices for gold Bars skyrocketing and business dried up; consequently, many businesses went out of business or changed hands quickly as investors attempted to cash in on the new opportunities created by gold fever! In 1865 Captain Hill sold his interests in Rancho Hercules and moved back East where he continued farming until his death in 1922. For most residents of Doniphan it was little more than a memory - although some continue to be buried there!
