In 1849, Hercules was founded by George W. Eldridge and his brother James on the east side of San Bernardino County. The brothers were farmers who decided to start a town to serve as a stop on their route from Sutter's Fort to Stockton. Hercules quickly became known for its fertile land, good water resources, and friendly people. The town was first named Eldridgeville after George W. Eldridge and James Eldridge, but it soon became known as Hercules because of the great hero who had represented California in her epic battles against Mexico and Spain. Hercules grew rapidly until 1860 when a fire destroyed most of the town except for two buildings which still stand today: the Hotel de la Constitucion and the Masonic Lodge Building. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Hercules while on his way to visit General Antonio López y Gasset at El Cajon Naval Depot in Southern California and recommended that the United States build a military post in California because of its strategic location between Baja California Peninsula and Central America (the original goal of this expedition). By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in Hercules with several businesses including butcher shops, blacksmiths, cheese factories, flour mills etc., all located around what is now downtown area. In 1875 local newspaper editor Hosea Cook published an article about how some citizens were objecting to raising money for erecting a new courthouse by selling subscriptions to a special issue entitled "Hercules Valley." This set off a series of public meetings throughout the county which resulted in recommendations from various government officials such as Governor Pahrump wrote to President Rutherford B Hayes asking him not only to fund construction but also ask Congress for passage of an act authorizing payment through bounty programs for men killed or captured during Mexican-American War expeditions into Mexican territory east of Baja California Peninsula The first building erected in downtown Hercules was built by contractor Jethro Ewing behind what is now the Bank Of Commerce building on Main Street opposite where the Post Office currently stands.
