Hercules is a small town in Fresno County, California. The population was 1,800 at the 2010 census. Hercules is located in the east-central part of Fresno County on State Route 99 and Interstate 5. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. The first European to sight what became Hercules was Giovanni da Vercelli who landed here on November 15, 1492 during his expedition against Alcuin of Yorktown. The name "Hercules" is Spanish for "Heroic". Hercules was given its full name by John Cranch in 1848 when he donated part of his farmstead to establish the post office there along with other buildings including a school and store. In 1874, Simeon Marcus opened a general store and blacksmith shop in what is now Hercules which became an important retail center for farmers around the county until it closed in 1959. In that year, authorities began efforts to build Interstate 5 through what is now downtown Hercules and bypassed the eastern edge of town so development continued out into farmland much later than elsewhere on I-5 south of this city limits; however some remnants can still be seen today including parts of Marcus' old Store building as well as millrace that served as I-5's original routing from north to south before rejoining I-5 near Modesto about 10 miles east of downtown (I-5 then crossed over Stanislaus River). In 1976, after years of planning by local officials and citizens, Interstate 5 was finally completed just east of downtown Hercules with access available only from one side; this created major problems for residents who could no longer access their businesses or services without going out into I-5 traffic lanes which are now used by motorists travelling towards Downtown Fresno headquarters complex or terminating at US 101 just west of town limits where they merge onto I-580/SR 99 Alternate which continues eastbound until reaching Highway 395 near Modesto
Hercules was first known as the home of the Morongo Band of Mission Indians. The Morongo Tribe established their permanent residence in Hercules in 1853, and remain there to this day. The town of Hercules was founded on May 6, 1865 by pioneers who came from San Francisco looking for a place to settle. They named their new settlement after the Greek god Heracles, who had fought against various monsters and have been associated with physical strength and bravery ever since. Hercules quickly became a thriving community, full of commercial enterprises and homes for leatherworkers, miners, farmers, and ranchers. In 1896, when California became a state, Hercules was one of its first cities. The city continued to grow throughout the 20th century until it reached its current size in the late 1990s. Today, Hercules is an important cultural and economic center within the San Joaquin Valley region of Northern California
