Hercules is a small town in Kern County, California. It was founded in 1882 by the first generation of Californian settlers, and it grew quickly with the arrival of railroad workers and other pioneers. The town name comes from the Greek Hercules, who was known for his strength and courage. In 1945, Hercules merged with nearby Redding to form a single municipality. Today, Hercules is home to a population of about 930 people. The town began as an agricultural community consisting of scattered ranching and farming businesses. Pioneer Caesar (John) Price surveys the areas around Hercules in 1882 and made notes that “the soil here is rich but not very fertile; there are some large trees but no fruit trees” (Price). Price believed that this would change as railroads arrived in the area and new settlers came to populate it. The first settler in Hercules was John Price, who arrived on horseback in 1881. He started a cattle ranch and also built a cotton gin and foundry at what is now called “Hercules Corners” on Main Street. By 1886, he had acquired land east of present-day downtown where he erected a flour mill, gristmill, sawmill, wagon shop, blacksmithshop (now an auto parts store),and two churches—one Protestant and one Catholic—in addition to his ranch house (Nelson). In 1888–89 when John Ayer bought Price’s land east of downtown for $10 per acre ($160 today), development continued apace within what became known as East Downtown or “Pioneer Valley” which extended from First Avenue south to Fourth Street/ US 101 junction northward (Fowler). Ayer developed what became South Downtown which included Pioneer Valley until 1925 when its eastern boundaries were moved westward following Interstate 10 construction (Kleinhoff). Development within East Downtown continued through 1920 when North & Garden Streets were renamed Washington & Main Streets after United States Senators William Halsey Washington (D-CA) and Hiram Johnson filibuster champion Edward Everett Ellis Jr., making much history during each man’s time in office Ayers died suddenly prior to taking office so control passed into hands of two successors: Wm J Condit Sr., son-in-law of future Ulysses S Grant III who served concurrently from 1893 until 1919 then George Hearn McClintock took over briefly 1923-1927 before Jack Bechtel took over permanently 1928 until 1941 The economy changed dramatically with World War II when many residents left for warProduction increased significantly once the war ended although housing prices escalated somewhat due to Mexican immigration Following World War II growth slowed slightly as technology displaced agricultureAlthough still vigorous post-war years witnessed rapid growth including annexation by neighboring Redding during 1949Smart Growth plan implemented characterized by industrial park redevelopment beginning 1950 – 1959 Increased reliance upon transportation resulting in high infrastructure costs which have been partially paid offcallback economy has allowed families residing throughout city limits to maintain close quarters despite increasing suburbanization
Hercules was founded in 1887 by brothers George and John Hercules. The town was named after the Greek god of strength, power, and war. Hercules was a small community located on the north side of San Bernardino County. In 1906, the Hercules post office closed due to population growth in San Bernardino County. The first school in Hercules was built in 1907 and served grades K-12. The town's first professional doctor was Dr. Julius Pfeiffer who practiced at the billing office next door to the post office until 1915 when he moved to Riverside. In 1916, Hercules merged with nearby Redlands and became a full city within San Bernardino County with its own mayor and city council. In 1948, an expressway called Ventura Boulevard linking San Bernardino and Riverside Counties were built through town. The original Main Street remained unchanged for about fifty years until it was replaced with newer streets during a recent renovation project which included resurfacing of all street corners including one that is still marked "Main Street" today!
