In 1875, Soady donated his shotgun to the town of Hercules, which later renamed it after him. The town washome to a small arms factory run by Arisaka and Perrin Company until World War II. From there, the company moved its production downstream to Solvang and Rohnert Park. During World War II, Arisaka and Perrin produced over 1 million guns for the United States military. After the war, they continued to produce firearms in Hercules until they closed their business in 1960. Today, local gun stores still sell Arisaka and Perrin shotguns from before World War II.

Hercules means " strenuous labor." Hercules was a cattle driver and later, a ranch forester in California. He became involved with the gold Rush in 1848 and started drove herds of horses and cattle to the Gold Rush sites. In 1850, he married Calista Yellowjacket. They moved to California and began farming near Fresno. Hercules built the first white house in Fresno in 1852. The couple had six children before Calista died in 1862 from tuberculosis. Hercules continued farming until his death in 1865.
Hercules is located in the Mojave Desert, about an hour east of Fresno. The first European to find the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 20, 1542. He named the area Monterey because of Mount Mexico, which he saw from his ship San Salvador while sailing past California. In 1821, Lieutenant Colonel James K. Polk sent a party under Lieutenant Thomas H. Woodward to explore and map the California coast. They discovered what became known as Point Lobos (present-day Imperial County), and recommended that it be explored by a military force so that land grants could be developed there for settlers. A group of soldiers led by General José Joaquín de Arzobispo arrived at Monterey on July 9, 1825 and founded what would become Hercules City Limits with nine square miles of land grant from Governor Manuel Folsom. The town grew rapidly due to its location, good soil, water resources, and easy access to trade routes through Nevada and Arizona
