Hercules is a small town in Kern County, California, about an hour south of Fresno. The post office at Hercules was established in 1887, and the first store was built on Main Street in 1912. Hercules businessman Clarence "Red" Bryant started construction on the new Toyota factory in nearby Romneyville in 1982 and attracted so much business that he decided to keep his village name. In 1990, when Toyota moved its production fromToyota Motor Manufacturing Company (TMPC) plant located nearby to Kearny Mesa, Schwarzenegger chose not to rename Hercules as part of that move but instead honor Red Bryant with a plaque dedicated at the Kearny Mesa plant housing company headquarters. In 2000, during the tenure of then-Governor Gray Davis, who was then term-limited under state law and could not seek re-election for another four years until after his successor had been elected and confirmed by the California Constitution Revision Commission (CRC), allegations began surfacing that Davis had accepted bribes from two private companies seeking federal contracts totaling $25 million dollars: Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) and McDonnell Douglas Corporation (MCD). It soon became clear that these were only some of many possible connections between Davis' gubernatorial campaign and various corporate entities interested in securing Federal contracts at a time when such deals could be extremely lucrative for both political insiders and their clients. Although no charges were ever brought against Davis or any individuals involved with his gubernatorial campaign or with receiving payments from LMT/MCD/, these revelations created significant public uproar throughout California which led to calls for higher levels of transparency within government institutions across all levelsof government as well as stronger penalties for corruption involving major taxpayers like Davis. This pressure eventually forcedDavis to resign on January 7th 2003 citing health reasons just one day shy of his fourteenth year in office; this made him one of only three Governors in California history to have served more than four years without being impeached or removed from office due to impeachment proceedings before they left office; also notable are Jerry Brown who has won six elections as Governor while serving two full terms since 1978 without facing impeachment proceedings[5]
Hercules, California was founded by George C. Brougham on February 14, 1873 as a small town in the east Contra Costa County district. The community of Hercules grew quickly and soon began to attract people from all over the Bay Area. In 1907, Hercules established its own school system and in 1916 became part of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system. By the early 21st century, Hercules had become one of BART's most popular destinations with its freeways and shopping districts.
