The name Hemet first appeared in 1847 when Hidalgo County was organized from parts of Kings and Kern Counties. A post office called Hemet was established in 1854, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1868, James Fenton opened a grocery store in what is now downtown Hemet. The store became known as "Fenton's." Fenton continued to operate his grocery store until 1951 when it closed its doors for good. In 1951, The American Tobacco Company founded their corporate headquarters in downtown Hemet which remains today one of the most iconic buildings in town. American Tobacco also built numerous other businesses throughout Downtown Hemet over the years including a bank (1957), insurance company (1968), dry goods store (1990), welding shop (1998), furniture store (2000), pet supplies store (2004) and more recently a Home Depot (2012). Downtown Hemet increased its population by over 100% during the 1990s due to an increase in development along East Fork Big Sur Creek which led to new shopping malls being built near Interstate 5 and State Route 99 as well as new housing developments such as Mountain View Place and Desert Sands subdivision across from Interstate 5. The recent trend has been away from development towards more rural based neighborhoods with smaller retail stores centering around schools or library complexes
Hemet is a city in Riverside County, California. The population was 14,564 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Riverside County and the second most populous city overall within the San Bernardino metropolitan area. The first people to inhabit Hemet were Native Americans who lived along the rivers and streams that now run through it. In 1824, Mexican immigrants founded a mission here after arriving on horseback from Sonora. The formal incorporation of Hemet as a town took place on November 3, 1854. In 1916, Major General John J. Pershing chose Hemet as his headquarters for his Mexican Expedition against Pancho Villa; this event is commemorated by a plaque at Pershing Park. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with its contribution to building up southern California's defenses against Japan and Germany. During the war, Hemet became one of the largest cities in southern California with over 160,000 residents living in or near downtown areas such as State Street and MacArthur Boulevard. The post-war boom commenced withhemet becoming one of Southern California's fastest-growing cities by 1970 with an increase in employment rates from professional and technical services to retail trade and other economic sectors such as information technology and real estate development
