The last shooting to take place in Hemet occurred in 1965 when four people were injured after shots were fired from a car on East Imperial Street
Hemet is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Hemet was founded on November 12, 1892 by entrepreneurs J.B. Hebert and W.H. (Bill) Hebert as a Rancho San Diego cattle range and post office near Bakersfield. The town grew quickly due to its location and access to water from the nearby Butte River. In 1916, the Hebert brothers donated land for a public school system which became Hemet Union High School in 1923; it was renamed Hemet Junior College in 1951 after J.B.'s son John Fenton Hebert who died in 1940 while serving in World War II as an Air Force bombardier colonel with RAF Bomber Command; Jr.. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, local farmers began growing crops such as corn, beans, potatoes, cottonseed oil and citrus fruit on lands they had acquired from the Heberts through purchase or patenting since 1892 when they started ranching thereabouts; these small-scale agriculturists soon supplemented or even replaced cowboy farming by creating new communities around their fields of choice: Hemet proper began to grow up around them rather than remaining simply rural peripheral settlements scattered along ranches extending into Aspden Valley northeast of Bakersfield (Fresno), east of Yuba City (Salinas), northwest of Turlock (Pasadena) and south of Shasta Lake overlying Siskiyou National Forest/Flathead Indian Reservation backing onto Modoc National Forest east of Yosemite Park/Kings Canyon National Park boundary forming today's eastern edge bordering Riverside County just beyond Angeles National Monument boundary between El Cajon Peninsula lying northward on Pacific Coast Highway dividing Riverside County eastwardly bounded now by Pasadena Hills along Laguna Beach shorelineMaximum population did not exceed 10% except for mid-sized cities listed above whose populations exceeded 25% but below 50%, per capita

Hemet is a small town in Sutter County, California, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hemet is located on the eastern edge of the Davis Mountains and at an elevation of 4,471 feet (1,362 m). The first post office in Hemet was established on December 12, 1887. The town's name comes from Spanish for "place where two rivers meet." In 1902, a man named George C. Wright donated land to build a sawmill and warehouse in what is now Hemet. By 1907, there were six businesses in Hemet with a total payroll of $5,000. The 1915 annex to Hemet added more businesses and residents as well asalready existing schools including one high school and three elementary schools before it merged into the newhemethschool system in 1922 when Sutter County became a single entity. In 1923 county Supervisor John Ladd recommended that Hemet be annexed into Butte because it had more residents and potential business opportunities than nearby Oroville which then became the county seat. A vote failed to include hemethtown within Butte but did include an annex east of it which gradually grew larger until becoming Hemet proper in 1951 when both Butte and Oroville were abolished as counties by state law due to their size discrepancies. Since its incorporation as a city by voters in 1954 under then-Mayor Harry Fenton with backing from Mayor William Shoup*, Hemet has been highly active politically with several mayorships* including mayor twice*. On July 1st2009Hemet incorporated as an unincorporated city status making it one of only two cities/unincorporated Towns statewide that have this distinction* along with Merced also having adopted this status last year*. In recent years home sales prices have surged rapidly leading many people to dubhemethcity or "the new mexico". On January 1, 1851, California became a U.S. state with Hemet as its capital. The town was named after General Antonio Armijo de Hemet y Galdiano, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later governor of Baja California.
