The area became part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War, and then United States after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1846, gold was discovered near what is now Hemet, and development began in earnest. By 1870, there were over 1,000 businesses in the town. The population peaked at 20,000 in 1920, but declined following World War II and the economy crashed during the Great Depression. Despite these challenges, Hemet has continued to grow since its inception as a small community. Today it has a population of around 30,000 people and is home to several universities including Southern California University and Fullerton College.
Hemet is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kerns City and School District. Hemet is located on the banks of the Kings River which forms its border with John F Kennedy National Forest to the east. Hemet was founded by Mexicans in 1849 as "Hemet de las Aguas" (literally "homes of water"). The original name may have been chosen because there were no springs or other sources of water in present-day Hemet. The town's current name comes from Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna who granted it to three men named George Washington Onofre, José Castro and Manuel Miranda on November 16, 1847 after they had freed an American prisoner from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1859, gold was found at Sutter's Mill in southern Mono County and settlers began to arrive in what became Hemet. By 1861, there were over 250 people living here including 50 Indians who worked as farmers and miners. A post office called "Hemet" was established in 1861; however, it did not remain open long due to the difficulties associated with providing service across such a large area with few roads or structures available for mail delivery. In 1865, local grazer Juan Bautista Chavez discovered silver near where Hemet now stands; this led to a significant increase in mining activity around Hemet and nearby Klamath Falls during that era. Mining towns quickly sprang up all over Nevada during this time as crews prospected for veins of silver ore beneath difficult terrain full of shale and other minerals. The last commercial mine operating within Hemet boundaries closed down in 1984 when mercury levels reached too high inside several mines caused by Mine Hill earthquake damage seventy years earlier; however, Silver Peak State Park still contains evidence from earlymining operations dating back to before 1800 BC! A post office called "Hemet" reopened on July 9th 1950 after being closed for many years due to lack of interest by residents; it served until May 3rd 1978 when it merged into Kerns CityPost Office #2 which remains operational today! In 1951–1952 also saw construction begin on what would become known as North Main Street which ran through much of downtown Hemet today prior to its final completion two years later! This street once connected downtown with Agricultural Drive just east of Highway 395 northbound (now Interstate 5) while Agricultural Drive looped around southbound I-5 opposite corner today before terminating at North Main Street again! Today most people refer to North Main Street as Adobe Road/Route 66 since that's how most locals remember it originally! Adobe Road still runs through downtown but has been renamed US 95 since 2001 due mainly towards development along I-5 corridor less than one mile away - making Adobe Road one block wide now instead of two blocks wide when first conceived!! hemetsouthwestcoast

Hemet is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Hemet is located on the edge of San Joaquin Valley National Monument and has a history dating back to 1847 when it was part of Rancho La Puente. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down the old adobe Mexican Mission here and drove out the Californios who had been living there for centuries. The city's first store opened in 1847 on Adobe Rd., east of present-day Hemet City Hall. It was known as "Nelson's Store" because its proprietor was Nelson Avila (1807–1892), an American fur trader who also operated a ranch in this area. On October 14, 1853, Avila sold his interest in Nelson's Store to John Crespin for $4 per share. After about two years of operation, Crespin leased the store from James Wickersham and moved it to what is now northbound I-5 south of town limits on December 5th for $10 per year. In 1860 during the American Civil War efforts were made by General Ulysses S. Grant to burn down old mission buildings in central San Joaquin Valley as part of an effort to dislodge Confederate troops from their positions within that valley; however these efforts failed due to lack of supplies and artillery support along with heavy resistance by local Californians including militia led by Captain Elias Peralta (1796–1878). In 1865 Jno Burchill arrived from England bringing over three hundred acres (1 km²) of land which he donated including much of present day Hemet City Limits as well as most of present day Livermore Valley and all but a tiny piece extending into Orange County; this land became called Burchill Ranch after him. The city began developing adjacent areas such as Livermore beginning with planting alfalfa near Adobe Rd./Palo Alto Rd., west side street names beginning with E (Edgar), northwest corner First St./Sierra Ave., east side Ansonia/Colorado Blvd., southwest corner First St./Doris Dr., west side streets starting with NW (northwest), northeast corner First St./Mendoza Ave., southeast corner First St./Irvine Ave.. Today much downtown Hemet remains undeveloped while many adjoining neighborhoods have seen increasing development including Alamo Park which fronts Interstate 5 between downtown Hemet and Livermore Valley; portions of Olivet Avenue east-west running through downtown are also being developed into high-rise housing tracts becoming complete blocks bounded by Fifth Street SE/Alamo Park Road NE/I-5 SE
