During World War II much of downtown was destroyed by bombing raids conducted by Japan; however, many businesses reopened after nearby areas were spared damage. Despite this recent increase in population, however, Healdsburg's prosperity did not last past the Depression years of the 1930s which led to a decrease in residents until The 1940s when there were still over 4500 residents living in Healdsburg. The post-World War II period saw an increased number of students moving into Healdsburg from surrounding cities such as Berkeley and San Francisco. This new influx caused traffic congestion on Market Street which peaked during the late 1960s when over 100 cars were parked at one time near downtown Healdsburg! In recent years there has been an overall trend towards smaller communities being established within miles or even close by of larger urban centers where people can easily connect to services and amenities. This move away from large towns isrelated to several factors including competition for housing resources from larger metro areas; concerns about sprawl; availability of transportation options that allow easy access to local businesses; and increasing awareness among consumers that they have control over their own lives and mayors are ultimately responsible for keeping communities vibrant despite outside forces (such as economic recession).
