Healdsburg is located in the Santa Cruz County of California and has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 4,000 years. The first Europeans to arrive in Healdsburg were the Spanish who named it San Francisco de Asís. In 1821, United States Captain John C. Fremont discovered gold near Healdsburg and decided to establish a town in honor of his discovery. On July 25, 1825, the town was platted and founded as Healdsburg under the name of Fremont City. The first post office was established in Healdsburg on July 29, 1825. A courthouse was built in 1850 and became known as the county courthouse building. The first school opened in1852 and eventually became public school #1 which is still open today with grades K-12th grade classes being offered from Sept 1st through Dec 15th each year beginning Jan 1st. The great fire of 1906 destroyed most of downtown Healdsburg but not all its buildings including the courthouse which replaced after that date with what is currently known as First National Bank Building/Healdsburg Civic Center which opened on October 14th 1907 originally called “The Old Courthouse” due to its predecessor having been built back when land prices were high enough to justify such an auspicious name change! In 1934, Sheriff Harry Laughlin created a department within Hisoldburg sheriff’s office called “Public Safety” which served exclusively within city limits only until 1959 when countywide jurisdiction was given over by Proposition I (the so-called Migrant Crisis Reform Act) following passage of SB 1070 thereby giving law enforcement statewide powers! Today, both Sheriff Laughlin’s old departmental headquarters at 5151 Main Street (formerly home of Public Safety) and new Headquarters Annex located at 6482 Main Street are occupied by various agencies housed therein including: Multi-agency Rapid Response Team; SWAT team; Special Investigations Unit; Homicide Detectives Bureau; Gang Enforcement Team; Narcotics Investigative unit etcetera etcetera… ThisCity Owned & Operated Law Enforcement Agency remains one of America’s oldest continuously operatingSpecialty Law Enforcement Units even though it no longer functions solely as an arm or service provider for CountySheriff Harry Laughlin but instead provides sworn police services pursuant to Organic Laws authored by him & approved by voters via proposition Iback in 2014!
