Hayward, California is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 47,651 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in the Bay Area of San Francisco. Hayward also has the third-largest percentage of Asian people in the Bay Area after San Francisco and Oakland. Hayward was first settled by Native Americans in 1847. The first Europeans to arrive were Missionaries who arrived on horseback from Mexico City in 1846 and named it Rancho Las Armas because they saw hills with trees growing there. In 1853, George Coyne founded Coyote Station on what is now Hayward Creek where he built a toll road to bring goods to his rancho from Kinney Island near Concord. In 1865, Kerman Capps established an antebellum cotton plantation called "The Cotton Plantation" south of town on Eastshore Drive which became Coyote Heights after him and his family sold it in 1902. A large part of downtown Hayward is occupied by Coyote High School which replaced Wheatley Academy (now Diablo Valley College) as a public high school when that building was destroyed by fire in 1928. The area around Hayward Creek was known for its extensive redwood forests which were logged starting about 1840 until about 1910 when logging stopped due to prohibition laws enacted during the American Civil War era; however, some lumber remains today down river from Hayward Creek where it has been rescued from rot and replanted into old growth redwoods like those east of Menlo Park near Livermore National Laboratory Site R-2

The Christensen family continued to operate this store until 1924 when they moved out of town along with other businesses because of new zoning regulations which limited retail stores to five stories or less in height; this prohibition led to many banks moving out of town during that time periodoho
