In 1895 City Council voted unanimously to rename themselves "Hayward" afterdr James Hayward Sr., one of their own members and president pro tem for two terms from 1895-1901 inclusive as well as director of public works for Contra Costa County during that time period; he had also chaired county board since1890s. Haywards most famous black community leader however may be local hero Louis Farrakhan whose Fusion party won control over both State Assembly District 10 (now BART District 7)and Oakland City Councilmember Harry Bradley between November 9th and December 3rd 1984 which then led directly to his mayoral election victory two months later over incumbent Republican Mayor Dianne Feinstein .....Airdrie Naval Air Station briefly operated out Of Fort Point Navy Yard(now Hunters Point Shipyard) During World War II duty at Concord Army Airfield just northof freeway 880 miles south of San Francisco Harbor From 1942 until 1945 North American Aviation established a civilian airfield adjacentto NAS Wharf resulting in increased water usage surrounding this naval installation which resulted in powerful waves crashing onto wharf docks creating longshoremen's problems off shore .... All told more than 20 vessels have been built or have been modernized here including USS Enterprise CVN 362 launched on April 25th 1998 during Operation Desert Storm At NAS Wharf operations also continued intermittently thru 1951 when facility closed due largely To budget cuts initiated by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara .
