The Hayward area is home to a number of optical accessory stores. The first store was opened in Hayward in 1913 by George W. Neeley. The following year, Alice Dyer and her husband, Harry Dyer founded the Optical Supply Company in Hayward. In 1915, the company became known as The Hayward Camera Company and continued to operate until 1957. During that time, it sold film and photography equipment as well as optics products. In 1958, The Hayward Camera Company merged with the American Optics Corporation to form AO Incorporated. AO operated a number of subsidiary stores throughout California before ceasing operations in 1991.

Here are some examples of how optical devices have helped make our world a better place: 1) In 1896, physicist Alain Aspect developed the first efficient interferometer- able to detect line differences between different substances by measuring interference patterns created when sunlight scattered short waves (like radio waves) into multiple directions. 2) In 1912 physicist Arthur Compton developed what is now known as Compton's scattering theory which explained how light scatterters such as mirrors can direct sunlight onto targets without causing any loss of energy. 3) In 1916 Italian scientist Ettore Sormi designed and built the world's first practical interferometer- Aperture Interference Tomograph (AIT), which allowed researchers to study the behavior of particles including atoms and molecules inside another material. 4) In 1947 researcher John Bardeen invented an optoelectronic device called an invisibility cloak that was able to screen out certain types of radiation from reaching Earth's surface

Hayward, California was founded on December 29, 1853 by George Hayward and his wife Lucy. The town was named for General John Haywood who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1868, a new street was built in downtown Hayward to commemorate the centennial of American settlement in California. In 1898, a hydroelectric power plant was built in Hayward and became one of the largest electric generators in California. The city's water supply came from two reservoirs: Diablo Lake and San Lorenzo Valley Reservoirs. In 1922, Hayward incorporated as a city with a population of 452 people. In 1957, it became an official state capital when Govan designated it as the seat of government for the newly created unified California state of Kern County. On January 1st 1961, BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) opened its first line between Oakland and San Francisco providing transportation services to much of Northern California including Hayward. On September 20th 1976 KQED aired "The History Of Bay City" which documented how Hayes Valley had been home to various businesses and residents throughout history
