Hayward is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 96,776 at the 2010 census. Hayward was founded on November 30, 1868 by Captain George Hayward and his wife Martha as a small community on the west bank of the San Joaquin River. It grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Donner Creek and its natural resources: coal, oil, watermelons, and saltpeter. The city became an important center for agriculture because of its fertile soils and proximity to valuable water resources. In 1919, Hayward annexed part of Napa County to form a new municipality. In 1984, ChevronTexaco moved its corporate headquarters from Houston to Hayward after purchasing a majority stake in Texaco USA from Texco Corporation. The first recorded mention of Hayward appears in 1836 when José Martinez reported seeing "a great many huts erected upon high ground near by some large pieces of wood which were used for cooking". Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza visited this area in 1776 and named it La Selva del Norte because of its abundance of northerly seals or sea lions that he observed hunting on the river's banks. A year later Englishman John Walton explored these same waters shore-side and named them Hastings Bay after Lord Hastings who had been involved in financing Spanish exploration in California during the Mexican–American War (1846). The first recorded sale of land within present-day Hayward took place on May 12th 1868 when Captain George Hayward sold 8 acres (2 ha) at what is now downtown Hayward to Elias Howe for $8 per acre ($2/ha). Hayward started as a small town with just over fifty residents when it was platted on November 30th 1868 by Captain George Hayward along with his wife Martha Haywood. The original town site included only one block - bounded by Second Street on the north side; Fourth Street on the east side; Donner Creek on the south side; and Fourteenth Street between Cedar Avenue and Mission Boulevard on topography that resembled that found near Sammamish where Washington State's first permanent settlement was established about two years earlier during President James Kenedy's explorations through central Washoe Valley known as Rancho Nevado de la Luna y Arroyo Seco . Prior to their arrival there were no buildings or other physical evidence remaining from early Californian settlements outside missions such as Sacramento or Monterey Bay areas which likely date back much further than those located within modern day San Francisco Bay Area including Richmond BART Station which is less than one mile away! That blocksidentity still remains today with nearly every street nameakes an ancestor who once resided within 500 feet (150 m)of their current home position! This geographic isolation allowed small farmers like Captain George Hayes & Mrs Haywood to build homespun businesses around food production notably haymaking & tanning operations while also marketing their products directly to local consumers through family stores & letter writing campaigns! For example theyBUSINESS NAME HAYWARD COALITION LAND SALE INCorporated OCTOBER 12TH 1868 . After Miss Mabel Atwater married Capt Geo Hays her last name changed from AtwatertoHayward thereby becoming an official business entity! Both Mrs Hays (& Capt Geo.) continued running MrsAtwater's Store until 1893!!!!!! A few weeks later Capt Geo Hays seller deed adding another 2 acres northwest corner 4th St + Willow Drive sold for $10 per acre ($4/ha) !! After World War II, many businesses moved out of downtown Hayward due to high rents and low wages. However, some companies such as Alcoa continued to operate until they closed their doors in the early 2000s. Today, most of downtown Hayward is vacant and derelict with only a few exceptions such as an old movie theater and a few apartment buildings left standing.. Despite its shortcomings, downtown Hayward offers some interesting artifacts from its past which can be visited during regular business hours: The old Courthouse Annex building dating back to 1907 is open for visitors to toured during regular business hours; stairs inside lead down into an subterranean basement where you can explore ancient silica brick tiles still used today; there are also several galleries which offer interesting displays about local history; Finally, there are several eateries/bars available for visitors to visit while they enjoy their lunchtime stroll through Downtown Hayward - including one called The Grapes which features delicious salads!
