The first permanent Anglo-American settlers were businessman John Sutter and his family who arrived from Stockton in 1847 and built a log cabin on Hetch Hetchy Creek northwest of the present day City limits of Hayward; they named their new settlement "Sutter's Ferry". On January 17th 1875 Jens Rasmussen set out from Copenhagen with three friends to explore what he thought may be an open country south of Sacramento Valley; he never returned alive after becoming lost in this area for days upon arrival. On October 15th 1873 George A. Hayward purchased a Rancho Gutierrez from José Herrera for $2,500 cash plus ten acres (40 ha) vacant land nearby which later became known as Hayward Township . The town site was chosen because there were no other settlements within five miles (8 km). With help from Captain William Richardson surveyors Daniel Butterfield and Jacob Bakewell , Construction began on December 12th 1874 with Work starting immediately on buildings that would become the first school edifice west of the Mississippi River - School #1 now stands within walking distance of downtown Hayward today! Hayward grew rapidly due to its location near Lake Merritt & easy access to goods brought overland via wagon trains originating further north along I-880 or ferries crossing San Francisco Bay

Hayward is home to several parks including Lake Merritt Park and Botanical Garden, Recreation & Aquatic Center with a water slide/lazy river feature called "Riverside" which also features a large outdoor amphitheater for concerts or other events, Creekview Park with a beach volleyball court/pool area, Highwater Dam Conservation Area with hiking trails leading up to it, retrieve pontoon boat rentals available at various points on the river system - perfect for enjoying a day out fishing or just taking a relaxing paddle (note: these activities are now generally prohibited due to development near the dam), Placer Boulevard with shopping opportunities along one side only since most longshore processing operations have relocated elsewhere in Greaterameda County (but there are still some local businesses that offer related services), etc., etc...
