The MBUD storage tanks are now gone but their remains can still be seen today as part of Calderon Park which includes a playground, tennis courts, basketball court, and oak tree seedlings garden area According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. It is bordered by Contra Costa County on the south side and Alameda County onthe north side with Mission Creek between them; these borders have changed little over time except that Contra Costa County has annexed much of what once constituted Hayward's eastern border The City consists mostly of hills averaging about 5 feet (1 m) high with scattered homes above . Most streets run east-west with some running north-south which makes for easy walking but also offers limited cover against possible vandalism or crime Hayward experiences occasional earthquakes due to its location atop an active fault line and there have been several major fires including one that destroyed entire blocks around downtown in 1906
