In 1876, a man named George Eastman started manufacturing binoculars in Hayward, California. The first binoculars were made of wood and had no magnification capabilities. However, over time, Eastman began to make lenses from metal and glass. In the 1920s, he invented the first practical reflex action camera and began selling his products nationally. By the late 1940s, he had produced more than 2 million binoculars annually. By 1974, Eastman’s company was merged with Nikon Corporation and production ceased in Hayward. However, some of the archives related to binocular production remain in existence as part of Nikon’s archive system. These include records for development of optics for binocular use; marketing research; test results; and correspondence between management and employees about their work. Binocular production resumed by Nikon at its headquarters in Japan in 1980 after a two-year hiatus caused by World War II hostilities there. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II as the largest military base in Northern California and its industries produced munitions, aircraft parts, missiles, tanks and other war-related products. In 1949, Hayward joined with San Jose to form the new City of San Jose. The merged cities had a population of over 1 million people until they were separately incorporated into their respective cities again in 1996.

They named their new town after Willis Hayward, who had helped them out during their first trip to China. In 1865, they opened what would become known as City Hall which served as a meeting place for local farmers, merchants, politicians and other residents until it burned down in 1886. In 1896, Hockaday & Company built the first large machine shop in America in Hayward using modern technologies including foundry methods and electric lights. This gave rise to what is now known as Hockaday Heights neighborhood which still retains many of those early 1800s buildings including City Hall. From 1898 through 1916, Hayward was home to two important military installations; Camp Foster (later Fort Point) on Golden Gate Bridge across from downtown Hayward and Camp Pendleton on Treasure Island off Ramona Creek near Fremont Boulevard southeast of downtown Hayward

The University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley) is located in nearby Oakland while other large universities include Stanford University (Stanford), UC Davis, UC Merced, UC Riverside and UCLA Bruins among others. Many high-technology companies have their campuses within or close by Hayward including Apple Inc., Google Inc., Oracle Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Company, Intel Corporation and Twitter Inc.

The first Europeans to visit Hayward were Diego de Almagro and Gaspar de Portolà in 1769, who named it San Francisco after King George III of Great Britain. In 1846, the United States acquired a large tract of land south of present-day Hayward due to its annexation into California as part of the Mexican–American War. In 1868, the city was founded when the San Francisco Bay Bridge was completed connecting San Francisco and Oakland. The city’s population increased rapidly during World War II because of its proximity to military bases and manufacturing plants. The city experienced a significant growth spurt following the opening of Disneyland in 1955. As jobs moved out of town and factories closed down, Hayward lost its status as an economic center and began to experience a decline in population over the next few decades. However, starting in the late 1990s, rapid gentrification has led to renewed development in Hayward; this has revived the city’s economy and made it an attractive choice for residents and tourists alike.
