The first Europeans to visit Hawthorne were Spanish priests and Missionaries in 1769-1770. They named the area San Fernando de los Bueyes because of the abundance of wild deer that they saw there. In 1821, John Sutter arrived in California with his stockade settlement at Sutter's Fort and began exploring what would become Kern County. He met Nathaniel Hawthorne while he was on horseback grazing near his home in 1824. Hawthorne told Sutter about an Indian village west of him called Painted Rock which he had seen as a boy. This led to the founding ofmagnificent Rancho La Brea by Sutter and his partner George Calfee in 1847-1848; it became one of the most valuable land holdings in California In 1850, when Congress passed the law creating the federal district of Los Angeles, part of it included much of what is now Kern County including Hawthorne Village and all or parts of seven other settlements: Arroyo Seco (now Arroyo Grande), Beaumont (now Bell Gardens), Brisbane (now Buena Park), Calabasas (now Claremont), Colusa (now Colusa Hills), Chatsworth (now Claremont Hills) and Donner Pass/Niles Pass National Monument (#2). Of these eight settlements only two - Brisbane and Donner Pass - remain today: Donner Pass has been annexed by nearby Palm Springs while Brisbane has been merged into Riverside County A post office was established at Hawthorn Village on December 12, 1860, under ZIP code 94118 Hawthorne became a town on January 14, 1870 with a population OF 714 On February 15th 1870 Samuel Morse sent an email from Washington D.C., "I have just been appointed Postmaster for this place"

Hawthorne is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. It was the original home of the Hawthorne Railroad and later became a shopping center. The Hawthorne post office operated from 1875 to 1945. I first visited Hawthorne in January of 1984 while on vacation with my family. I was blown away by the beautiful scenery and architecture of the town. I also loved how much community spirit there was throughout everything there- everyone knew their place and contributed to making Hawthorne such an interesting place to live in. The history of Hawthorne can be traced back to 1875 when the Hawthorne Railroad opened up its tracks through what is now rural San Bernardino County. The railroad connected with other businesses and residents in nearby towns such as Westville, Thousand Oaks, Riverside, Fontana, Jurupa Valley, and Ontario. The town quickly grew due to its location and access to transportation. In 1916, the Hawthorne Merchants Association was formed which helped promote local businesses and economy within the town limits. The association also spearheaded campaigns for school funding, streetscape improvements, housing development, health care reform initiatives etcetera. In 1941 when World War II began%, many families left for military service so that more resources could be put towards creating munitions plants across Asia etcetera- leaving behind small towns all over America with little hope for future growth or prosperity . In 1951 when President Truman made his recommendations for social welfare programs following V-E Day-, including food stamps/public housing projects etc., most small towns like Hawthorne were very negatively impacted as they lost their key economic drivers (workers) overnight . Due to this lack of opportunity or reinvestment into small communities during these tumultuous times - manysmall business owners went bankrupt or closed their doors altogether . Hawthorn slowly regained some level of stability starting around 1965 as young people started returning home after serving in the Vietnam War etcetera-. This new generation saw potential in what had once been a struggling community; they restored homes and added new businesses while maintaining traditions like Maypole dances (held every year on Thanksgiving) at various festivals throughout summershells like Lake Arrowhead etcetera-. However it wasn't until 2000 that things really took off again as people poured back into town from outsidevironnementally friendly places such as Aspen/Aurora Colorado/Santa Fe New Mexicoetc.- bringing life back into abandoned structures on Main Street (& surrounding neighborhoods) & helping give life back to an oftentimes forgotten part of our larger community . Hawthorn has experienced some major changes over time including: births & deaths rates among its population; wholesale prices for goods & services; annexation by neighboring jurisdictions; land use conversions; demographic shifts caused by newcomers & natural effects thereof- all of which have had a significant impact on both its physical landscape & social fabric
