Hawthorne, California is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was estimated at 83,815 as of 2018. Hawthorne is the county seat for Orange County and has been since 1853. It lies on the border of Anaheim and Newport Beach, both of which are adjacent cities. The town was renamed after Nathaniel Hawthorne – American author who wrote novels such as “The Scarlet Letter” – on May 31, 1913 by vote of the Town Council after he donated land for a public school system that would serve all citizens within hisRTown limits regardless of ethnicity or race. In 1923 the City Council voted to annex portions of Dana Point because that city was experiencing rapid growth due to its location near Long Beach Naval Base and its access to Interstate 5. The annexation resulted in the creation of Dana Point-Hawthorne Municipal District with a population of 23,362 residents in 1961 when it amalgamated with nearby Newport Beach Municipal District 3 to form Orange Countywide municipal district 10-1 which had a population of 81,075 as of 2018
HawTHorne is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California, about halfway between Fresno and Modesto. The name comes from a Rancho Hawthorne that was once part of the land grant to Juan Bautista Alvarado. The original town was founded in 1847 by Captain George Vancouver and his wife, Eliza Haworth, as a small community near what is now Sanger. In 1853, when the Gold Rush began, Hawthorne became one of the first towns to be developed along the new gold-bearing trails. It quickly became an important depot for traffic on Route 66 and also served as a crossroads for travelers travelling east and west. By 1928 it had grown to 1,600 people and included a school, post office, hotel and several stores. However, during World War II Hawthorne was bombed by American bombers on multiple occasions; its only physical damage came from a fire that destroyed some homes in 1942. Hawthorne experienced another period of growth following World War II when local farmers started growing fruits and vegetables such as apples and grapes. Afterward, the population stabilized at around 100 until the early 1960s when it began declines again due to various factors including commuting distance to jobs in Fresno or other nearby cities (the departure of many farmworkers led to further reductions in population). The population peaked at around 200 in 1990 before beginning a gradual decline which has continued until it currently resides below 100 residents.
