Smith and named after Hawthorne, an old English village in Northamptonshire, England. The first post office was established in Hawthorne on July 5, 1853. Hawthorne's early history can be traced back to 1836 when Thaddeus Stevens founded the town on a rancho grant that he had bought from Captain John Sutter. At first, Hawthorne was little more than a frontier outpost with few residents and only one store. However, over time it grew into a thriving community with its own school and post office. In 1853, Stevens sold his share of the rancho to Aimee Blythewood and her husband Harry Emerson Fosdick for $7000 cash. Fosdick quickly built up Hawthorne into one of the most substantial towns in Kern County by expanding its infrastructure including a new courthouse and jail which opened in 1860; a flour mill (1861), sawmill (1862), cotton gin (1863), grocery store (1864), blacksmith shop (1865), hotel (1868-69), lumberyard (1872-73) and farmsteads scattered throughout rural Kern County - many now within walking or driving distance of downtown Hawthorne. By 1870 Hawthorne had become home to around 1000 people with three churches and two schools as well as several businesses such as bank, livery stable, bakery/café etc., making it one of the largest towns west of Sacramento during this period. The late 19th century saw significant growth for Hawthorne due not just to increased trade but also thanks to suburban development on both sides of the county line: northward into San Bernardino County and eastward into Fresno County respectively. This migration led to an increase in crime rates in areas surrounding downtown compared to those without dense development which accelerated during World War I when stores were looted near military bases across country; however following repeal of Prohibition later that decade crime decreased againalbeit slowly due largely to newly formed law enforcement agencies dedicated specifically towards fighting liquor trafficking rather than crime itself although occasional violent Crime stillOccurred until around 1950s In 1925 HAFTHORNE merged with nearby Redding becoming known as "Hawthorn Redding" even though both towns continued to operate separately until 1959 when they united under their present name reflecting their unique heritage combined with common interests such as issues facing their respective communities viz: education/jobs/housing/transportation etc.. Today what once constituted rural Kern County has been replaced by high-density suburbs stretching all along Highway 395 corridor between Los Angeles and Stockton Furthermore there continues to be concerns over potential consequences associated with climate change including water shortages & floods which have already impacted parts of Downtown & North Central portions thereof while also creating challenges for transportation etc.; however despite these challenges downtown Humphreys continues providing opportunities for commerce & culture while simultaneously shining an example for sustainable living
