In 1840, John C. Fremont founded the town of Hawthorne in the vicinity of today's Hawthorne, California. The first post office was established in 1841. In 1851, a school was built and named John C. Fremont High School after him. On October 1, 1858, the townsite of Hawthorne were incorporated as a city by an act of the California State Legislature. In 1863, Hawthorne became part of Los Angeles County and was annexed to it in 1907. By 1910, there were over 100 businesses in Hawthorne with over $1 million worth of sales annually. From 1915 until its closure in 1922, Wernher Beuthin Manufacturing Company made target holders for military use and also produced other items such as hunting knives and rifles under the company name "Beuthin Target Arms". The manufacture closed due to World War I production limitations which led to increased competition from foreign manufacturers who could now produce targets at a lower cost than Beuthin Target Arms could do. After World War I ended, target holders production resumed but ceased again due to continued government prohibition on handguns during Prohibition era America

Hawthorne is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. It is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River and on the edge of the Central Valley. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by John Hawthorne in 1853, who named it after his late father, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne had been living in Illinois until he moved to California in 1846 because of the Gold Rush. He became a landowner and entrepreneur in what is now Contra Costa County. The first store opened in 1854, and within two years there were ten stores open along with a post office. In 1861, Hawthorne donated one acre (0.40 km2) of land for a school which later became known as Hawthorne High School. A hotel called the New Hotel opened in 1865 and soon afterwards many other businesses began to open up including restaurants, inns, and theaters like The Alhambra Theatre Company which staged plays at the new theater until it burned down in 1903). In 1923, when most people thought World War II would end quickly, General Douglas MacArthur sent an detachment from his 10th Infantry Division into Hawthorne to observe their activities during training maneuvers outside of nearby Redwood City. MacArthur's presence caused some local residents to start rumors that he was 15 feet tall with green skin and white hair- which only furthered distrust among some of these people who did not believe him when he claimed otherwise about his unit's role during World War II. This incident has been referred to as "the Haltiwanger Incident". Hawthorne experienced significant economic growth following its incorporation into Contra Costa County as part of Northern California's efforts to become economically prosperous during this time period known as "the Golden Age".[1] Many large companies such as Unocal Corporation built factories or established headquarters here while small businesses grew rapidly thanks to cranking up its own transportation system using horse-drawn cars instead of railroads; this also allowed for more marketing opportunities for products offered here compared elsewhere.[2] By 1950, much like neighboring cities such as Orinda and Walnut Creek,[3] Hawthorne had become one of the most heavily populated places on Earth due largely to suburbanization across Contra Costa County[4][5] spearheaded by Interstate 80/State Route 24 development projects that followed World War II military infrastructure needs postwar.[6][7][8][9] As recently as 1990,[10] over 60%[11] or more[12][13], Hawthornians reported having English language skills limited only 4–5 words per sentence or less due mostlyto lackof exposure typical for Californians born between 1945-1965 raised primarily within inner cities; however recent increasesin knowledge & technology have ledto increased communication abilitiesamongst individuals residing withintown limits since 2000’s w/ resultant increasein tourism spending associated wit hincreased awareness & appreciationofthecommunity’s rich history
