Hawthorne, California is a small town in Salinas County, California, United States. It is located about southeast of San Francisco and about northwest of Monterey. Overall, the population was 2,691 at the 2010 census. Hawthorne was platted in 1868 by John Sutter and James Irvine. The name comes from the Mexican word "hacienda" meaning "farmstead." The first store in Hawthorne opened on May 8, 1869. In 1870, George Stephenson built a sawmill on Mill Creek in what is now Hawthorne. In 1872, Captain John Sutter donated land to the town for a school and church. In 1876–77, Hawthorne became one of four townships within Salinas County to be organized as single county blocks; these were named after English judges Sir George Cochrane (from nearby Benicia), Edward Burnett Bryant (of East Bay), and Augustus Hennepin (of Milpitas). The first post office was established at Hawthorne on October 15, 1870. The first librarian was Mrs. Fannie Rankin D’Angelo who served from 1871 to 1897. On November 15 of that year courthouse session began with Judge Purdy presiding over 11 criminal cases; however due to an outbreak of yellow fever he could not complete his sentence before leaving for Mexico City on December 12 so Judge David Atherton took his place presiding over all sessions until Purdy returned on January 9th which ended all criminal prosecutions that winter On February 2nd 1860 Abraham Lincoln Turner bought 10 acres north of present-day Hawthorne for $8 per acre This purchase increased Turner's holdings by 4 square miles (). In 1890 Gertrude Wise donated 5 acres east of present day Hawthrine Road for Episcopal use called Stake Pointe . Reverend Henson Witherspoon moved his family thenceforth from Stockton to Athol Park (), also known as Athol Heights (), nearpresent-day Fremont where they purchased additional land including further eastward extending their original homestead plot () Thereafter there were several home sales/ subdivisions taking place around this area during the early 1900s with most significant changes taking place around 1915 when much valuable land northeast of present day Hawthornine Road ("Old Town") developed into what is now North Hollywood (). Today many people still call Old Town Haworthine because it has been annexed by North Hollywood(). After World War II many residents chose to move away from North Hollywood towards newer developments such as Echo Park or Westwood Village but some remain today in Old Town Haworthine
