The town's current name comes from Englishman Nathaniel Hawthorne who lived there during the early 1800s. He purchased some land near the river and named it after himself - Haworth cloth Factory or 'Hawthorn' meaning 'vale'. The first municipal election took place on November 3rd, 1877 and incumbent Mayor Thomas Girtner won with 71% of the vote over challenger Wm Copley 14%. At this time only male citizens were allowed to vote due to state law at that time. One important event that took place during Hawthorne's history is when Major General Auguste de Montgolfier donated land to help build what would become North America's first airfield - Agoura Hills Airport - which opened in 1940 services both military personnel and civilians alike! Nowadays much of what used to be built within walking distance of downtown now resides outside the boundaries of town limits because development has taken over throughout much of Sonoma County! One significant buildings still standing from earlier years within downtown include Mrs Girtner’s Store (now part of Kaiser Permanente), The Masonic Temple (built 1893), Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church (1912), State Capitol Building (1897) – all now used for various purposes including office space or housing!
