This range offers some great beginner options with plentiful woodlands surrounding it as well as some very good single shot rifle/pistol ranges that can accommodate up to 12 participants at once for those who are interested in trying out this type of shooting experience.

The population of Hawthorne peaked at 1,814 in 1950 but has since decreased to less than 1000 residents. The most common economic activity within the community is farming with a majority of the inhabitants self-employed in agriculture or other related businesses. Hawthorne is home to one of only two remaining post office stores in Kern County open on an hourly basis (the other being Doheny). The store closed its doors in February 2009 due to low demand from customers during slow times for mail service.
