The town was founded in 1876 by Captain John H. Hawkinson who named it after his Hawthorne Ranch, which he had acquired a few miles east of town. Hawthorne was an important agricultural center during its early years and many well-known brands such as Levi's, Dockers, and Gillette were created here. Many businesses closed or moved away when the post-World War II boom ended, but the community has kept its cultural heritage alive through various events and festivals. Hawthorne is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 11,574 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Francisco after San Francisco and the fifth most populous city in California. Hawthorne's namesake comes from General Nathaniel Hawthorne, an American novelist and short story writer who lived there during the 1820s. The first post office at Hawthorne was established on May 6, 1851, by James H. Whitehead with a mail order service from Boston. The town was incorporated on February 15, 1852 by John Sutter and others as part of the new township of San Mateo County; it became a full-time local municipality on July 1 of that year. When Gold Rush fever hit northern California in 1850–51, many men prospected for gold near or within town limits; some found it but lost their lives while others returned empty-handed to their hometowns only to succumb to disease or return home dead rather than gamble away their golden opportunities again that winter. So when John Sutter offered $6000 for 3 acres (1 km2) of land called "Pleasant Hill" just outside town on November 17,[4] few were likely to resist its offer because they saw no other way out until supplies ran low and gold prices went up again in March following Sacramento's successful strike at Sierra Leonean slave labor mines two weeks earlier;[5] then everyone wanted a piece of that rich vein either as buyer or miner/worker/shareholderafrom central Valley towns such as Stockton before rapidly expanding into present day Hawthorne when news reached them about good prospects over yonder across Coyote Gulch & Redwood Creek 4 miles NW where Chinese miners had struck 8 months earlier & 2 miles SW where prospectors had found nuggets worth $8000 over 10 days back in October 1861.[6] At this time even General Nathaniel Hawthorne may not have known what he was looking for when he set out westward from Concord NH aboard his horse Cyclone ontooyster Bayou Road 10 miles SW along Coyote Gulch January 7181871 (or anywheresabouts)[7][8], one day before he arrived at today’s intersection of First Street & Pleasant Hill Avenue

Hawthorne is a small town in California, located about an hour's drive from Los Angeles. The name was given to the community by J.D. Power and Co., who named it after the Hawthorn tree that stands near the town's center. The first permanent settler in Hawthorne was James Irvine, who arrived in 1847. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now Hawthorne Village and planted crops with his own land. In 1851, he married Sarah Parker and moved into what is now the village core of Hawthorne. Hawthorne grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its strategic location: It lay at the junction of two major wagon routes connecting Southern California with points east, and its beautiful scenery drew people from all over America. In 1857, John Sutter discovered gold near Hawthorne and began mining for gold here as well. By 1870, many residents had come to live in Hawthorne because of its good agricultural prospects and easy access to water resources. The population reached 3,000 by 1880; however, by 1900 it had dwindled to just 100 people due to natural attrition and expensive expansions caused by nearby Los Angeles City Hall’s development boom (the city annexed much of rural California during this time). But despite its dwindling population size, Hawthorne continued to serve as an important center for local government until 1984 when it became part of Los Angeles County under Proposition 13 (a measure passed by voters in 1978). Today there are only a few remaining residents living within walking distance of downtown – most have left for other parts of LA County or for neighboring Orange County because of high housing prices there.
