Hawthorne, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 76,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The first guns were used by sepoys in 1846 during the Mexican–American War. In 1851, Captain John Sutter and his men founded the town of Hawthorne on an island in San Francisco Bay as a garrison for their Rancho Descansado (later called Alta March). At first they used shotguns and rifles but soon developed handguns to deal with Native Americans who had also begun to settle in the area. In 1857, Captain James Wickersham purchased land adjacent to the town from José Joaquin Murillo for $2,000 cash and began building what would become known as Wickersham Field across from what is now Fort Point National Monument. This action marked an important milestone for gun violence in Hawthorne because it provided a permanent place for humans and firearms to work together peacefully. Gun violence decreased after this event but increased again shortly afterward due to rivalries between local militias that had formed around these new fields of battle. In 1871 Major General Mariano Castro issued orders forbidding any further civilian disarmament so that military forces could control militia weapons more effectively. As a result of this ruling, gunfights became more frequent between local militias and the military which led to many deaths both on both sides over competing interests in ammunition procurement and competition for dominance among different agencies within state government
