The city also hosted numerous airfields for use by Allied Forces during the war such as Monterrey Army Airfield (Anzio) and Point Mugu Naval Air Base on Isla Mujeres off Mexico City Bay. In 1951, Hawthorne was merged into Los Angeles County as part of its efforts to increase suburban growth within county boundaries.
