The first permanent settler in Hawthorne was James Playfair, who arrived in 1879. He built a cabin on the east side of town and named it Hawthorne after his family's home in England. Other early residents included John Atherton (1880), William Fenton (1881), Isaac Dunham (1882), Moses Woodruff (1883), Samuel J. French (1884), and Augustus Holmes Morrison (1886). In 1890, young George Custer died during an expedition into Nevada while trying to return gold prospectors' mounts back to their owners. His death inspired many people to move to Hawthorne after hearing about his story. This led to increased traffic and development around what is now Hawthorne Elementary School- which began construction in 1903. The post-World War II period saw a significant growth in Hawthorne as more people moved here due to job opportunities available at military bases throughout California and Nevada. The population reached 2,000 by 1975 but then plunged below 1,000 until 2000 when it started increasing again slowly but surely through new immigration from Asia and Eastern Europe. In 2014, the community had officially surpassed 1,000 residents for the first time since its founding! Hawthorne is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Inland Empire metropolitan area. Hawthorne was founded in 1852 by John Dutton and his wife Elizabeth. Hawthorne is named for Humphrey Walpole Hawthorne, an English author who wrote about the town's history and people in two books: "Hawthorne" (1850) and "The American West" (1895). The first post office operated in Hawthorne on July 8, 1852. The current post office building was built in 1922 and has been used by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors as their offices since that time. In 1865, Colonel Orville Eells opened a hotel called the Hawthorn House which became a popular watering hole for soldiers traveling to and from war adventures on Fort Sill near Oklahoma City. In 1896, Judge Augustus Farnsworth bought land adjacent to what is now Hawthorne Boulevard from William Haines for $2,500 (). Farnsworth developed it into a large agricultural community with homespun cotton plantations (), cereal fields (), dairy farms (), gas stations (), stores () and corrals (). In 1911 it had 536 residents (). By 1920 only 249 residents remained living on farmsteads () or within one mile of downtown (); however many retail businesses were established along Center Street between Cedar Avenue and Elmira Road as well as other streets through out the community such as Main Street South () which served as commercial districts for all parts of town until after World War II when they were designated government-owned property (). Many residences still exist today including several hundred acres of farmland west of downtown where crops are grown such as rice, corn, beans and wheat; several thousand square feet of office/industrial space located just east of Center Street; three churches (); six schools (); four amateur golf courses (); five water systems (); over sixty miles (120 km) of gravel Roads ; more than twenty thousand pieces of ethnographic art.; numerous historical artifacts
