In 1939, when the area became part of Clark County, Hawthorne's population was 1,500; by 1960 it had declined to 350. However, some local farmers kept growing crops until after World War II when oil exploration began producing natural gas hereabouts. That led to new development throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s with businesses like clothing stores, pizza places and fast food joints opening up along with new homesbuildings. Today, Hawthorne remains an agricultural community with a focus on vegetables and fruits; hay production also plays an important role here. There are also several schools in Hawthorn including one high school which offers students statewide access to Advanced Placement courses through its honors program; as well as two middle schools which offer classes leading to membership in both districts' school systems (one district's public school system while another district's charter school).

In 1927, Hawthorne became part of San Joaquin County and saw its first growth as a result; more than doubling its size over the next ten years. However, this prosperity didn’t last long as during World War II much of eastern San Joaquin County was taken up by military camps which caused many residents to flee to neighboring towns such as Dixon or Carlsbad for work opportunities 1944-1945; however, Community College also increased enrollment throughout these years due to nearby Livermore’s arsenal being build just downriver from town which made shopping and other needs easily accessible
