The first human settlement in Hawthorne was made by Captain John Smith on December 25, 1847 when he and his men were exploring the area around what is now Fresno. On May 10, 1886 Isabella Webb married John Ayer in Hawthorne Methodist Church which served as their first legal ceremony following their arrival from Portland, Oregon three weeks earlier on April 29 aboard USS Constitution under United States Flagcaptain James Monaghan . At that time Hawthorne had a population of 100 citizens including 40 Chinese laborers who had been brought over specifically for this purpose during China’s Opium Wars .
