After being discharged from Cook's service at age 19 because he had not completed his three years of service requirements (he had served as cook on two voyages), Joshua moved to Worcester County near Philadelphia where he purchased 160 acres (65 hectares) of land near present-day Hawthorne while living with his family members in what is now known as Old Westbury Manor House/Hawthorne Mansion*. Joshua started homesteading the land shortly after purchase*, although he did not actually live on it until after he acquired title to it from local settlers.* Joshua's death occurred on July 25th* , 1830 * due to natural causes unrelated to any illness or accident which might have befallen him previous year† . Some sources claim that this event may have been hastened by some personal animus towards Nathaniel Weyl whose brother-in-law lived nearby at Old Westbury Manor House/Hawthorne Mansion†† [* * See footnote for further details]. Reverend Samuel Morse visited America shortly beforeJoshua's death* *Morse recorded an account of one such visit hereon †† . However – despite claims made by various historians – there are no records whatsoever demonstrating any type of animosity or problem between Morse and Weyl preceeding their interaction at Old Westbury Manor House/Hawthorn Mansion*. Nathaniel Weyl later married Hannah Morelladier* *See footnote for more details about this marriage‡‡ *. When Hannah died childless in 1843 she bequeathed her vast inheritance including most importantly $10 million dollars plus interest thereto unto her husband Nathaniel Weyl Jr., son of her late sister Hannah Morelladier* *.
