Hawthorne is a small, rural town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 730 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley region. The first post office opened in Hawthorne on October 8, 1884. The current post office building was built in 1935 and replaced a previous structure that had been destroyed by fire. Hawthorne has a public school and two churches: First Baptist and Adventist. Named for Major George A. Hawthorne who served as military governor of California from 1849-1852, the community developed around his rancho (now within the city limits of Hawthorne). He married local girl Emma Goldthwait in 1848 and they raised six children there before moving to Stockton in 1850s to join their father's business venture there. It wasn't until 1861 when General John Blythe decided to annex parts of Kern County into California that Hawthorne started receiving attention from settlers as an agricultural center due to its abundant water resources including surface water from mountains and underground aquifers. Hawthorne is a small town in Northern California, located about an hour east of Sacramento. It was founded in 1847 by John Hawthorne and his wife Lillie, who named it after the Hawthorn tree near their farmstead. In 1850, Hawthorne built a sawmill on the creek that feeds into the northern end of the Bay Bridge. The mill continued operating until 1906. The first post office in Hawthorne was established in 1851; it was renamed Dixon in 1865. The population of Hawthorne grew gradually during its early years, but began to grow rapidly after gold rush fever hit the area around 1858. By 1860, there were over 200 people living in Hawthorne. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, many businesses and residences were built in and around Haworthie Village; these include a Masonic Lodge (1896), Episcopal Church (1902), Methodist Church (1903), fine home builder James Moulder (1908-1959) and several agricultural families such as the McKinnon family (1892-1971). In 1907, local resident George Culp developed a new water filtration plant at what is now known as Culp's Camelback Dam; this became one of earliest industrial sites west of the Mississippi River. The plant produced drinking water for residents of Hawthorne and other areas west of Sacramento until it closed in 1966. After decades of service, it finally succumbed to corrosion from rainwater runoff on Friday 9 July 2006 at 5:27pm PDT when parts failed due to weathering and rust inside an open system with potentially millions gallons washing down onto adjacent property overnight before finally spilling over into Plumas Creek adjacent to Interstate 80 just past Dixon StreetFWIW Hawthorne has experienced various phases throughout its history including being primarily residential/farmstead rural until after World War II when subdivisions started popping up all around town while also becoming increasingly commercialized with larger housing developments starting appearing right up against I-80 beginning about 1960 or so which continues today although some smaller residential buildings have been preserved through efforts by locals like Friends Of Dixon & Plumas Creek
