By 1907, most of Hawthorne's residents were white Europeans; however, African Americans lived there until 1949 when they were re-instated under Proposition 209 as part of creation of affirmative action programs in California colleges and universities. In 1954 Hawthorne incorporated as a town under state law; it remained an unincorporated community until 1984 when it became part of the city of San Bernardino
