The Hawthorne Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1876. The club first enjoyed success with its rifle and pistol events, but it soon became apparent that the club was too small to field a competitive team. In 1889, the club moved its meeting place from the old Masonic Hall to the Hawthorne Rifle and Pistol Range. This gave the club an official home for competition. The Arsenal Shop continued to provide ammunition for shoot-outs at the range, as well as other services such as janitorial support. In 1903, members of the Hawthorne Rifle and Pistol Club met to discuss how they could improve their organization. They decided to create a board of directors, which would manage day-to-day operations of the club. That same year, they also created a trophy system to recognize entries into various tournaments held at the range. The Arsenal Shop closed in 1916 due to World War I; however, it reopened in 1919 as part of a new munitions industry boom in Hawthorne. Over time, this business grew into one of Hawthorne's most important economic engines; it continued being operated by members until 1996 when it was sold off to another member group. Hawthorne is a small town in central California, population 7,869 as of the 2010 census. It is located in San Bernardino County, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles. The name "Hawthorne" derives from an Indian word meaning "snowy mountain." Hawthorne was founded by Captain George Humphreys and his wife Elizabeth on November 3, 1807, on the north side of what is now Mohave Lake. The first post office was established at Hawthorne on February 17, 1809. The first store had two doors and sold goods such as beads and cloth to Indians along the nearby Mojave River. By 1837, most people in Hawthorne were white settlers who had come to purchase land around this lake and river. A mill was built in 1836 and began production of flour for local markets. A sawmill followed in 1840; both mills are still standing today. In 1851 the first hotel was opened; it remains extant today as the Hawthorne Hotel & Casino. In 1865 a railroad line extended northeast from LOS ANGELES to Hawthorne; it served as an important transportation link for farmers transporting their crops to market near LOS ANGELES. In 1886 a large water project called Needles Dam became necessary because of increasing floods caused by heavy rains that year; this led to the establishment of the City Water Works Company which still operates today under different names including LAWRENCE WATER SYSTEMS CORP., LAWRENCE WATER DISTRIBUTION COMPANY., AND HAWTHORN CITY WATER WORKS COOPERATIVE.). In 1923 a new school building was erected adjacent to an existing church; this building remain extant today as the old School House Museum Complex (formerly known as La Brea Elementary). In 1926 ground was broken for what would become Hawthorne High School; construction continued through 1929 before finally finishing in 1930. Today, part of high school is used as a community center while other portions are used for housing and commercial purposes including a movie theater which reopened on October 9th 2006 after being closed for many years!

Hawthorne was founded in 1853 by Hiram Hawthorne and his brother Nathaniel Hawthorne. The town is located in the San Joaquin Valley, about an hour's drive from Sacramento. It became a city in 1909. The Hawthornes were originally farmers who moved to the area in 1851. They started a grocery store and then opened a bakery. In 1857, they started a cotton gin and began trading goods with nearby towns. In 1865, they built their first home and continued to trade goods with other towns until their death in 1901. Their son Hamlin Haworth took over the business until he too died in 1925. Today, most of the buildings that were used for business or family life remain standing, including the original grocery store which still stands as a notable landmark of Hawthorne history.
