Hawthorne is a small town located in Modoc County, California. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is known for its natural gas reserves and for its Hawthorne School District which includes Hawthorne High School and Hawthorne Middle School. The area now called Hawthorne was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1800s. In 1857, James Redding established the townsite of Redding City on land he had bought from the Yokuts tribe. The town was incorporated in 1892, but it wasn't until 1907 that Hawthorne High School was built on the site of what is now the school district's Administration Building. Hawthorne has been through several name changes since then - including Redding City (1907-1910), Modoc (1911-1920), and Horseshoe Bay (1921-1991). In 1926, Hawthorne residents voted to change their name to Crystal Valley after discovering significant deposits of crystal oil near their community. Today,Crystal Valley remains one of two localities within the Modoc County Regional Center district that are still considered independent municipalities subject to regional government control as specified in article IV section 3(a) of the county charter. One thing that has always made Hawthorne an interesting place to live is its large number of natural gas reserves situated just outside of town on both sides of railroad tracks mainline. There have been many attempts by companies over time to drill into these resources but no success has ever been found so far; however, this doesn't mean there isn't potential for some big discoveries down the road!
Hawthorne was founded in 1849 by cattle rancher James Fenton and his wife, Lucy. The town grew rapidly from its initial population of 10 people to 100 by the end of 1850. By 1853, Hawthorne had a post office, school, and store. In 1855, Hawthorne became a city with its own government.
