Hawthorne was founded in 1848 by Solomon Hawthorne and his brother-in-law, Ebenezer Porter. The Hawthornes were the first white settlers in what is now Hawthorne. They named their little town after their home place in England. The Hawthorns prospered as farmers and traders until they sold their land to the Rancho Cucamonga Company in 1876. In 1896, the company merged into California's Central Pacific Railroad and the town became part of Pasadena. The history of Hawthorne goes back to 1848 when Solomon Hawthorne and Ebenezer Porter bought a tract of land between Los Angeles and Pasadena from José Sanchez. The Oranges were already there, but they didn't have any buildings or commerce until 1850 when Hiram Bingham erected a store on 5th Street near Town Hall square. That year also saw the founding of what is now known as the American Legion Post #1 on Olive Street east of Main Street. In 1862, two years after Thaddeus Stevens became governor of California, he called for a census to be taken of all Californians over 25 years old because he wanted to plan future transportation projects across the state with roads that could be used by all citizens no matter where they lived or worked. A few months later, on October 1st, 1862, Solomon Hawthorne completed construction of his house at 394 North down La Brea Avenue which served as headquarters for many years for District 8 (the Antelope Valley) Supervisor John Leland who resided nearby on Normandie Road north of Hollywood Boulevard during those early days before it was annexed intoLos Angeles County in 1912! Hawthorne wasn't just an agricultural community like most other Southern Californian towns during this time; it staged some pretty famous events too! On November 5th 1868--the day after Thanksgiving--the first race ever held at Santa Anita Park took place with $2,000 given out for best horse performance! Winners included Bobwhite (owned by General James Fenton), ridden by Rufus Seward; Eclipse (owned by George Peabody); Arabian Prince (born c1830 at Don Pedro Spring near Tucson Creek), ridden by Ector “Cheech” Marin; Sacajawea (bred circa 1840/50 Atchison md nativity), ridden by Balthazar Jones; Native Son (c1800), third race bred Byerley Pryor making him one half owner with Thos Hurdlas & Jno Purdy Of Redlands pty Ltd., winner $8000! It was also this same year that Drury Lane Theatre opened its doors giving America's first professional movie theater experience! On December 12nd 1868 Joice psuedonymously wrote "A Visit to Hawthorn" for Ladies Home Journal followed up with an article two weeks later professing her love for her new adopted home: "It is not often that I enter into public prints but herewith I send you a sketch or view from my front door showing my beautiful home - Mrs Palmer's Residence - inside and out...I am very much attached to it...I think our society has been greatly improved since I left." As if being published in Ladies Home Journal wasn't enough hoopla back then let's add another feather unto Mrs Palmer's cap--she would go on to become oneof Hollywood's biggest stars through her starring role opposite Cary Grant in For Whom The Bell Tolls! And just like that we've got ourselves another legendary figure associated with both parties involved!--Hawthorne indeed had its fair share o' history going 'round during these times!.
Hawthorne was founded in 1847 by John C. Hawthorne, a Virginian who came to California as part of the Gold Rush. The town was named for Hawthorne's farmhouse, which he had built on the edge of a small meadow near what is now downtown Hawthorne. The first post office in Hawthorne opened in 1852, and the first school was established in 1853. In 1857, Hawthorne became an incorporated city. In 1902, it merged with Los Angeles.
