Hawthorne is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. It is located on the southern coast of Monterey Peninsula. The population was 1,913 at the 2000 census. Hawthorne's history dates back to 1852 when it was known as "Newellville." The name change occurred because of the discovery of an old post office in that same year by Abraham Newell and his son-in-law John Leland. Hawthorne's first written record appears in an 1857 journal entry by Hugh Copley: What I am learning this morning deepens my conviction that if we will only adopt the use of English words wherever they occur, our language will be made more beautiful and more complete than any other on earth." In 1872, Isaac S. Morse donated land for a public school and named it after himself and his wife Susan Bancroft Morse. In 1886, Hawthorne became part of the University of California system when it was created from parts of five separate counties. As Californias largest university system grew larger and its campuses spread throughout the state, so did Hawthorne's enrollment; however, until 1959 all instruction took place at UC Santa Cruz (then known as Santa Cruz State University). The first commercial development in Hawthorne took place in 1902 when Wernher Hesse opened a general store on Fourth Street which served as a nucleus for many subsequent businesses along Fourth Street including Kress Shoes Co., Eveready lights plants (later Mercury Manufacturing Company), American Tobacco Company - precursor to Philip Morris cigarettes - First National Bank & Trust Company (now Wells Fargo Financial Group) and JCPenney department stores. By 1915 there were 20 businesses operating within one mile (1 km) of downtown Hawthorne with 100 employees employing 350 people total! Today most businesses have long since closed down or been moved away from downtown Hawthorne although some remain like Kress Shoes which still operates today as a full service shoe store/boutique with over 150 employee(s). Some notable examples are Ikea furniture stores being located next door to Andreyev’s pet store (now defunct), HP Pavilion location acrossthe street from Safeway grocery store now home to Chiquita Brands Mexican Grill restaurant also operated by IKEA; movie theaters such as Regal Cinemas being located just outside town limits; numerous agricultural holdings including Concord grapes production facility now used by AAF Corp.; several churches – St. George’s Episcopal Church being built in 1922 adjacent to original fruit farm where apples were grown before market]; daycare centers like Precious Child Nursery open up shop during off hours from early morning until late afternoon providing child care services for local families; large number of homes with attached garages/yards serving various needs such as dog walkers taking dogs for walks etc…. It really is quite amazing how these days some things haven't changed all that much since 1902!

It is part of the San Joaquin Valley and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 4000 years. In 1848, John Sutter founded the city of Stockton on what is now the north side of Hawthorne Boulevard in order to create a link between Sacramento and San Francisco. The town was initially named "Sutter's Fort" after General James H. Sutter who had first explored and claimed land in present-day Kern County in 1849. The first post office opened in Hawthorne on October 15, 1850. By 1860, the town had 3 stores and 9 residents. The railroad arrived in 1862 and soon made Hawthorne an important center for trade with other parts of California as well as Nevada and Arizona. In 1865, when Rowland Polk was elected President of America, he announced that all transportation would be provided by railroads instead of walking or horseback riding which would greatly improve efficiency during his term as leader of America. There were also some new inventions developed during this time such as the phonograph which was invented by Edwin Armstrong in 1877 and became popular among American music lovers during this time period In 1920s Hawthorne experienced significant growth due to its proximity to two major metropolitan areas: Los Angeles on one side and Fresno on the other side of Highway 99W which led to many people moving there from outside of California looking for better economic opportunities However much progress has been made since then including gentrification taking place while also experiencing several natural disasters such as a devastating fire that destroyed most buildings in 1996 which leftricher than average life insurance rates
