Ames traveled extensively throughout California during this time and named many places after people or events associated with California history such as Sacramento (1868), Yosemite National Park (1904), Tomales Bay (1925) and San Francisco (1849). One such place was Hawthorne, which he called Ames Prairie because he owned land thereabouts. Hawthorne experienced significant growth during World War II due to the nearby munitions plant operated by Union Carbide Corporation. Over 4,000 citizens served in military service during World War II including hundreds of men who worked at Union Carbide's main processing plant in Hawthorne.
